About Jasrota National Park

To the north of village Jasrota, at a distance of about 63 km from Jammu is the Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary. It does not cover a very large area, 10 sq km being its extent but it is definitely well worth a visit for the variety of animals and birds that are housed within it.

The Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary in Jammu and Kashmir is flanked by the River Ujh and its greatest attraction is the Cheetal or Axis deer. The vegetative cover of the region is dominated by bamboo plantations. The species that can be traced here are Dalbergia Sissoo, Acacia Catechu A.Arabica and Lannea Grandis. The flora includes shrubs like Carisa spinarum, Lantana camara and Dodonea Visacosa.

The animals that can be sighted here include a large variety of mammals and significant among them are Cheetal, Barking deer, wild boar, rhesus monkey. Bird lovers are sure to thoroughly enjoy a visit to the Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary. There are many resident as well as migratory birds housed within it. The feathered creatures that are to be sighted in the Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary include a rich variety of pheasants, peafowl, red jungle fowl, jungle bush quail, green pigeon and blue rock pigeon.

The Park Ecosystem

The Animal Beings
The most prolific mammals found there are Cheetal, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey.

The Vegetation
Even if the bamboo plantations basically dominate the sanctuary area, still other broad-leaved species such as Acacia Catechu A.Arabica, Dalbergia Sissoo, Lannea Grandis, etc are also found over here. The main shrubs that grow here include Lantana Camara, Carisa Spinarum and Dodonea Visacosa.

The Winged Beings
There is rich variety of Pheasants and other migratory and resident birds found in the sanctuary. The principal species are Peafowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Jungle Bush Quail, Green Pigeon and Blue Rock Pigeon.
